Description
Political cartoon by the artist Cyrus Cotton Hungerford portrays Mayor Charles H. Kline as actor Charlie Chaplin in the 1921 silent comedy "The Kid." The Kid (played by Jackie Coogan in the film) represents the Mayor Kline's initiative to play free movies in City Parks in Pittsburgh on Sundays. According to the July 31, 1929 issue of the Pittsburgh Press, the first free Sunday movie night was offered in Schenley Park, West Park, Highland Park, and McKinley Park. Mayor Kline says the phrase "The better the day - the better the deed," a saying which is meant to justify working on religious holidays and Sundays. (The Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs (5 ed.)). In 1912 Hungerford began as a newspaper cartoon artist at the Pittsburgh Sun, afterwards he produced daily cartoons at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from 1927 until his retirement in 1977.
