Description
Gilbert M. talks about finding work at the Homestead mill during the Depression through a casual offer from someone he knew, starting at $0.44 an hour. Despite the challenges during the Depression era, he survived by being resourceful, doing odd jobs, collecting and selling bottles, and even salvaging coal. He recounted the tough times and the scarcity of work between 1929 and 1936. Even though work was sparse, Gilbert never lost his job but often struggled to find consistent pay during those years. He discusses friendships and attending church more frequently after his second wife's passing. He also talked about his membership in the Masons, realizing he had joined the wrong faction and later quitting because of it.
