Description
Martin Duffy and Frank Leach describe anti-Catholic sentiments in Homestead during the 1920s and 1930s, recalling Ku Klux Klan activity near Kennywood Park in West Mifflin. They also describe steelworkers' strikes in Homestead, including the 1919 'Hunky Strike,' and how the authorities reacted to the strike. Leach recalls his work in the steel mill as a messenger boy and as a weighmaster, and the two men discuss the prevalence of gambling and movies as sources of local entertainment and the impact of the Great Depression on local industry and employment.
