Description
Beginning in 1895, the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh hosted an annual Founder's Day Program, often featuring political, scientific, and educational leaders from around the world. The October 13, 1927 Founder's Day coincided with the opening of the "International Exhibition of Paintings" (now called the Carnegie International) with U.S. President Calvin Coolidge was the featured speaker. FRONT ROW: George Cretziano (Romanian Minister to the United States); Paul Claudel (writer and French Ambassador to the U.S.); James J. Davis (U.S. Secretary of Labor); Daniel Winters (President, Pittsburgh City Council); Calvin Coolidge (30th President of the United States); Mrs. Coolidge (Grace Goodhue Coolidge, First Lady of the United States); Andrew W. Mellon (49th U.S. Secretary of the Treasury); Richard B. Mellon (banker and philanthropist, brother of Andrew W. Mellon); Samuel Harden Church (President of the Carnegie Institute); and Charles H. Kline (47th Mayor of Pittsburgh). CENTER ROW: Mrs. Richard B. Mellon (Jennie King Mellon); Madame Prochnik (Gretchen Sterling James Prochnik); Mrs. Davis (Jean Rodenbaugh of Pittsburgh); Mlle.
