Description
View of the bronze sculpture by the Italian artist Giuseppe Moretti of the Lawrenceville-native composer Stephen Collins Foster. Completed in 1900 in Highland Park, the sculpture was moved to its current location in 1944 in response to vandalism. It is situated near the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Schenley Drive Extension and the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, across from the Stephen Foster Memorial performing arts center. The sculpture depicts Stephen Foster sitting next to a black slave playing a musical instrument, representing the subject of Stephen Foster's song Old Uncle Ned.
