Description
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Johnny Jeter (25) and manager Danny Murtaugh (40) in home dugout at Three Rivers Stadium during a doubleheader against the San Diego Padres at Three Rivers Stadium. The Pirates won both games that day against the Padres: 2-1, then 10-1. The 1970 season was the first played in Three Rivers Stadium by the Pirates which replaced Forbes Field. The first game at the new stadium was held on July 16, 1970. Danny Murtaugh played for the Pittsburgh Pirates as second baseman from 1948 to 1951, and was the manager for the 1957-1964, 1967, 1970- 1971, and 1973-1976 baseball seasons. Murtaugh led the Pirates to four Eastern Division crowns and two World Series Championships (1960 and 1971), and was named Manager of the Year in 1960 and 1970. His win total record as manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates was 1,115-950, second only behind Fred Clarke (1422). Murtaugh's player number 40 was retired in 1977.
