Description
Road work at the North Charles Street entrance to the East Street Bridge, looking northeast towards Essen Street. The bridge, which opened September 15, 1930, was built and owned by the City of Pittsburgh. Officially named the E. H. Swindell Bridge, the bridge has also been known as the Essen Street Bridge, but is most often referred to as the East Street Bridge. The bridge is of an arched cantilever design with a deck about 225 feet above East Street. The total bridge span is about 1200 feet long with a main span of about 500 feet. I-279 passes below the bridge today.
