Description
View of the Civic Arena (1961-2011), looking northwest from the intersection of Centre Avenue and Crawford Street. Originally named the Civic Auditorium, it was changed shortly after construction to the Civic Arena, and from 1999-2010 it was called the Mellon Arena before being renamed to the Civic Arena once again in 2011. The sports complex served primarily as the home ice rink for the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team, as well as hosting other sporting and concert events over the years. Notable skyscrapers in the background from right to left: Gulf Tower (1932), Koppers Tower (1929), U.S. Steel Tower (mid-construction, completed in 1971).
