Description
Pennsylvanian mayors pose for a photo at a news conference in the Terrace Room of the William Penn (now Omni William Penn Hotel) for a meeting of mayors across Pennsylvania called the State Mayors Conference. According to a July 10, 1970 issue of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the conference was suggested by Mayor Flaherty after attending the United States Conference of Mayors. The intention of the meeting was to discuss unified legislation to be presented to the State Legislature, specifically focusing on fiscal issues. Mayor Flaherty was elected to be the chairman of the meeting. In attendance from right to left (front row): Larry Worth Business Administrator of New Castle (representing Mayor Carl A. Cialella), Zoran Popovich Mayor of McKeesport, Kenneth Tompkins Mayor of Johnstown, Louis Tullio Mayor of Erie, H. Gordon Payrow Jr. Mayor of Bethlehem, C. Bartholomew Mayor of Allentown. In attendance from right to left (back row): Victor Yarnell Mayor of Reading, James Tate Mayor of Philadelphia, Eugene J. Peters Mayor of Scranton, Richard Carey Mayor of Williamsport, Peter Flaherty Mayor of Pittsburgh.
