Description
Looking northeast at the intersection of Liberty Avenue with Grant Street. In view is Union Station (also known as Penn Station), looking southeast at the intersection of 11th Street and Liberty Avenue. Built in 1903 and renovated in 1954 and 1988, the office building section of Union Station now serves as an apartment building called the Pennsylvanian. Today it services only two Amtrak passenger trains: the Pennsylvanian and Capital Limited. Also in view (upper right) is the Clifford B. Connelley Trade School (now the Energy Innovation Center). According to the website for the Energy Innovation Center, the Connelley Trade School was one of the largest vocational schools in Pennsylvania when it opened in 1931, and offered students facilities such as a library, auditorium, gymnasium, and science labs. It taught students trades, such as "bricklaying and plastering, plumbing, auto mechanics, electrical wiring, carpentry and cabinetry, graphic arts and more" (Energy Innovation Center). The name of the school was changed to the Connelley Vocational High School in 1937, the Connelley Skill Learning Center in 1971, and the Connelley Technical Institute and Adult Education Center in 1992. The Connelley school closed in 2004. In 2014 the building was renovated and the Energy Innovation Center was opened as a vocational and trade school specializing in sustainable energy and technologies.
