  • Photo shows Schmeltz family farm located at 584 Rochester Road, near Sloop Road, in Town of McCandless, Allegheny County, PA. Photo shows members of the George and Elizabeth Schmeltz family. Elizabeth is seated on the porch with George (with beard) standing on the front right corner of the porch. Emma Schmeltz is standing in center of the porch. George and Elizabeth's three sons, George, William and John (left to right) are also seen in the photo. Two of the sons are holding leads to horses that are hitched to a wagon and a buggy. An oil derrick can be seen behind the house and to the left of the house. The house is a large two story clapboard home with two chimneys and 9 shuttered windows across the fornt of the home. Downspouts can be seen on either side of the house as well as the porch. There is a transom window above the front door. Two smaller windows in the basement can also be seen alongside the raised porch. Several fruit trees are also seen in front of the house. A dog sits at the trunk of the tree on the far left. The men are all wearing jackets and hats, and the women are wearing long dresses with long sleeves. Most of those in this photo are buried at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery on brandt School Road. The photo was taken by a traveling photographer. Neighbors to the Schmeltz family included the English and Sloop families with the Redpath family across the road.
