Description
The Grubbs family home at 415 Hulton Road caught on fire for unknown reasons, and the fire completely destroyed the three-story home and all its contents on a cold January morning in 1941. Both fire departments from Oakmont and Verona worked hard to battle the blaze. At the time it cost an estimated $10,000 in damage. Living in the house at the time were Mr. and Mrs. Parker W. Grubbs and their daughter, Margaret. Mrs. Grubbs was with the baby on the second floor when the fire was discovered. Their maid, Kathleen Hopkins, phoned the alarm to the fire department and then called Mr. Grubbs at his office. One theory at the time was that the fire resulted from a short in the wiring in the basement.
