Description
In this shaky clip taken aboard the Goodyear Blimp, Beal points his camera towards Three Rivers Stadium during its construction at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers. The shot also captures the U.S. Steel Building and the dismantling of the Point Bridge. Upon opening on July 16, 1970, the stadium became home to the Pirates and Steelers, and provided a space for events ranging from Billy Graham revivals to monster truck shows. Like many other stadiums of its day, Three Rivers Stadium was a multisport stadium (also referred to as “cookie-cutter” stadium) with a symmetrical shape and an artificial surface. While playing at the stadium, the Steelers enjoyed four championship seasons and the Pirates had two seasons leading to World Series titles. Roberto Clemente's 3000th hit and Franco Harris's "Immaculate Reception" also took place in the stadium. Three Rivers Stadium was imploded on February 11, 2001.
