Description
The Irene Kaufmann Settlement (IKS) was originally founded as the Columbian Council School and Settlement in 1895. The school's name was borrowed from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where the Congress of Women's Organizations challenged women from all over the United States to establish social settlements for the assistance of immigrant assimilation into American culture. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kaufman endowed the Irene Kaufman Settlement in 1909, in memory of their daughter. The IKS was nonsectarian and provided a wide variety of services to the immigrant community in Pittsburgh's Hill District neighborhood, including basic education for children, English classes, home nursing and health services, as well as art and music lessons, and athletic activities. Clubs were established for practically every age and interest group. The settlement's recreational and social activities were also trendsetters in Pittsburgh beyond, including their play school, day camps and playgrounds, and Emma Farm Camp in Harmony (Butler County), Pennsylvania. The Irene Kaufmann Settlement merged with the YM@WHA and evolved into the present-day Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood. The JCC continues the tradition of the IKS in providing programs and services to the nonsectarian community.
